Will You Make A Difference Today?

Moses shared a great prayer with us — Teach us to use wisely all the time we have (Psalm 90:12).

How will use your time wisely today? What does that look like in your world?

Let me today do something that shall take
A little sadness from the world’s vast store,
And may I be so favored as to make
Of joy’s too scanty sum a little more.
Let me not hurt, by any selfish deed
     Or thoughtless word, the heart of foe or friend;
Nor would I pass, unseeing, worthy need,
Or sin by silence when I should defend.
However meager be my worldly wealth,
Let me give something that shall aid my kind –
A word of courage, or a thought of health,
Dropped as I pass for troubled hearts to find.
Let me tonight look back across the span
‘Twixt dawn and dark, and to my conscience say –
Because of some good act to beast or man –
“The world is better that I lived today.” (Ella Wheeler Wilcox “Morning Prayer”)

Make your world a better place because you passed through it today.

What Are Rules For?

David is on the run from Saul. He leaves town so quickly that he didn’t have time kiss his wife goodbye. He didn’t even have enough time to grab a weapon, a change of clothes, companions, or food. So he stops by Ahimelech’s house to see if this priest has any food.

Remember the old nursery rhyme —

Old Mother Hubbard
Went to the cupboard,
To give the poor dog a bone:
When she came there,
The cupboard was bare,
And so the poor dog had none.

That’s just about what happened here. Ahimelech said, “The only bread I have is the holy showbread.” This consecrated bread was 12 loaves laid out each Sabbath in God’s presence. When this bread was replaced each week, it became food for the priests. Ahimelech recognized he has a moral obligation to save David’s life which superseded the ceremonial rules.

Jesus used this incident as an example when the Pharisees accused Him of breaking the law concerning the Sabbath day. Jesus and His followers had been walking through a wheat field, plucking some pieces of grain on which they could munch. The rule-keeping Pharisees said this amounted to work, and a violation of Sabbath rules.

I think sometimes we get so caught up in keep the rules (or following tradition, or preserving decorum) that we forget the meaning behind the rule. Or, more accurately, we forget God’s design behind the rule.

Every rule God gives is to keep us in a place where we can experience His presence. Rules are not life, but they are boundaries which keep us on the path to life.

Ahimelech kept David alive with showbread. Jesus and His disciples sustained themselves with wheat kernels. Jesus healed the sick on the Sabbath to bring life and wholeness.

Following rules just to follow rules misses the Point. Following rules to find the heart of God is the point.

Do you get the point?

Harmony Of Unity

One of the great joys for me living in Cedar Springs has been my involvement in the Cedar Springs Ministerial Association. It is so cool to get together with pastors from backgrounds so different from mine – Christian Reformed, Wesleyan, non-denominational, Methodist, and others – and have such unity.

It reminds me of what King David wrote

How good and pleasant it is when brothers live together in unity!

That word unity (or some translations say harmony) means everyone getting together at the same place, at the same time, and for the same purpose. Sort of like a choir that shows up to sing. Some may sing alto, some bass, some soprano, and some tenor. They may not sing all the same notes, but the notes they do sing brings out a full harmonious sound. So much better than everyone singing the exact same notes!

Our Association is planning a community-wide worship service on August 29 in Morely Park. And, appropriately enough, we’re calling this worship service UNITY. Calvary Assembly of God is relocating our service that morning to the park to be a part of the beautiful harmony.

I wouldn’t miss it! Because in this harmony of unity is where David says God’s blessing is —

Harmony is as refreshing as the dew from Mount Hermon that falls on the mountains of Zion. And there the Lord has pronounced His blessing, even life everlasting.

If you are in the Cedar Springs area on August 29, come and join us.

Pastors, if you live in another community, I would encourage you to begin to harmonize with the other God-loving, Christ-following churches in your city. That’s where God blesses!

My Best Friend

My Dearest Betsy,

Twenty-six years ago I began a relationship with my first girlfriend. Twenty years ago today I married my first and only girlfriend. Today I am more in love with you than I ever thought would be possible!

You are my best friend, my confidant, my favorite playmate, and still the only woman I’ve ever had eyes for.

Solomon wrote:

He who finds a wife finds what is good and receives favor from the LORD.

I’m so grateful that Solomon’s words have been a massive understatement for me. Being married to you has been so beyond good, and God’s favor has saturated my life.

So here’s to the next 20 years… I can hardly wait to see all that God has in store for us. And having you right by my side to share this adventure makes it all the more fulfilling.

I love you, my bride!

Everything I Need Is Right Here

God wants to bless people. He wants it so much, that He puts everything we need to receive His blessing right in front of us.

It’s not elusive. It’s not obscure.

I don’t need a Master’s in Divinity to figure this out

Now what I am commanding you today is not too difficult for you or beyond your reach. …No, the word is very near you; it is in your mouth and in your heart so you may obey it.

The New Testament amplifies this:

  • God’s laws are written on my heart, and my conscience tells me if I’m obeying them or not (Romans 2:15).
  • The Holy Spirit teaches and reminds me of everything I need (John 14:26; 16:8; 16:13).

You don’t need a spiritual pilgrimage to find God. He’s already written on your heart what you need to call out to Him. Don’t delay… call to Him today.

It’s Hard To Help Someone Up With Your Fists Clenched

Helpful people have to be openhanded people in order to help others. Tightfisted people may try to help, but they’ll probably bring more hurt than help.

In just one chapter of Deuteronomy (the book that is helping prepare the people to live in the Promised Land) there are several starkly-contrasted words. In fact these words hardly appear anywhere else in the book, except in this chapter teaching us how to help the down-and-outer. Like this one

If there is a poor man among your brothers in any of the towns of the land that the LORD your God is giving you, do not be hardhearted or tightfisted toward your poor brother. Rather be openhanded and freely lend him whatever he needs.

Throughout this chapter, look at the contrasting words…

  • Hardhearted  //  Openhearted
  • Tightfisted  //  Openhanded
  • Grudging heart  //  Give generously
  • Stingy  //  Freely lend
  • Empty-handed  //  Supply liberally

God tells us, “There should be no poor among you.” And, “Give to the poor as the Lord has blessed you.”

Do you know why we’re to give to the poor? So we can receive a greater blessing. Check this out

Give generously to the poor and do so without a grudging heart; then because of this the LORD your God will bless you in all your work and in everything you put your hand to.

A tightfisted person cannot catch a blessing from God; only the openhanded person can.

A hardhearted person cannot feel God’s love; only the openhearted can.

Pretty simple – if you want to be blessed, then generously bless others. Now let’s go do it!

Be Careful

In the final instructions before the Israelites were going to enter the Promised Land, the book of Deuteronomy uses the phrase be careful fifteen times –

  • Be careful not to forget.
  • Be careful to obey.
  • Be care to avoid making idols.
  • Be careful to honor leadership.
  • Be careful of your thoughts.

In the dictionary careful is defined as being attentive to potential danger, error or harm. It implies paying special attention to accuracy and being discerning.

God doesn’t ask this of me to cramp my style, but to put me in a place where He can bless me. And not just me: being careful leads to generational blessings. Here’s my favorite be careful verse

Be careful to obey all these regulations I am giving you today, so that it may always go well with you and your children after you, because you will be doing what is good and right in the eyes of the Lord your God.

Sometimes to be careful we have to slow down. We seem to want everything quickly and with as little effort as possible. Remember the cliché “Haste makes waste”?

What if you slowed down a bit today?

What if you took just a little time to be attentive to potential danger?

What if you paused long enough to discern if you were giving your best to God?

What if you took a moment to simply ask God to give you wisdom to make a decision?

Being careful… so that it may ALWAYS go well with you and your children after you….

Isn’t that worth it?

‘Nuff Said

“What does the Lord your God ask of you but to –

  • revere Him,
  • walk in all His ways,
  • love Him,
  • serve Him with all your heart and soul, and
  • observe His commands…

for your own good!” (Deuteronomy 10:12, 13)

‘Nuff said!

Leave Something Nice Behind

I walked into a coffee shop for a meeting this morning and someone who had been in Biggby before me was wearing the same perfume that Betsy wears. It made me think of her throughout my meeting. Without even realizing it, some anonymous woman left something nice behind for me.

Here’s a thought…

…how about if we find a way to leave something nice behind everywhere we go?

A few thoughts on how we could do this –

  • Pick up a piece of trash blowing across the parking lot (even if it’s not your trash).
  • Wipe the water off the restroom counter (even if you didn’t splash it there).
  • Smile at the over-worked, under-paid attendant who is “helping” you.
  • Straighten up the magazines in the waiting room (even if you didn’t mess them up).
  • Put the toys back in the toy box (even if your kids didn’t play with them).
  • Restack the fallen cups (even if you didn’t knock them over).

Do something unexpected.

Leave everything a little better than you found it.

Leave something nice behind.

C’mon, let’s make a difference.

Blessings

Just some personal musings on a well-known blessing.

The Lord bless you…

  • May you find nothing missing, nothing lacking.
  • May you be full and complete.
  • Then you will be better able to bless others.

…and keep you…

  • Safe and secure.
  • As a priceless heirloom.
  • As the apple of His eye.

…the Lord make His face to shine upon you…

  • So you are basking in His presence.
  • Reflecting His glory.
  • Distinguished from all others.

…and be gracious to you…

  • As He renews His mercies to you every morning.
  • Lavishing you with His blessings.
  • Not treating you as your sins deserve.

…the Lord turn His face toward you…

  • Knowing that you have His full notice.
  • Enjoying His full approval.
  • Living in His abundant favor.

…and give you peace.

  • All your anxieties banished.
  • Your confidence renewed.
  • Your direction assured.

When you say “May God bless you” to someone, you are saying one of the most powerful, loving things ever uttered. There is nothing like God’s blessing: nothing compares to it, and nothing can detract from it. May I encourage you to more regularly ask for God’s blessing to be on your life, and may you be lavish with your requests for blessings on others.

GOD BLESS YOU!
