On March 4, 1865, Abraham Lincoln delivered his second inaugural address. The opening section of Ephesians 1 is just loaded with words of God’s delight:
What is this thing in which God is so delighted, and for which we should be so filled with praise?
It is quite simply this: God has revealed Himself to us as a loving Father, His Son has made it possible for us to come into God’s family, and the Holy Spirit has given us the assurance that we have been adopted by our Heavenly Father.
That’s right … God’s plan was to adopt you into His family. When did He come up with this idea?
God loves YOU so much that He had a plan frombefore the beginning of time to adopt YOU into His family. That’s what Jesus made possible through His death on the Cross, and what the Holy Spirit is constantly trying to reveal to YOU!! WOW!!

God told the Levites, “I am giving you the service of the priesthood as a gift” (Numbers 18:7). So, pastor, a simple question: Does serving seem like a gift to you?
The service I get to do for God, and for my congregation, and for my city is a gift from God. May I never, ever feel it a burden, a task, or an obligation. It should always be a joy to serve!
In order to serve God and others in a manner that is God pleasing and God glorifying, I must keep fit spiritually, mentally, physically, and emotionally. “You must present as the Lord’s portion the best and holiest part of everything given to you” (Numbers 18:29).
A good prayer for pastors—
Search me, Holy Spirit, test my heart’s attitude on this: am I giving You the best and the holiest? Am I serving with joy or merely serving out of duty? You have given me this responsibility as a gift. May I accept this gift with overflowing joy!

The Purpose In Prayer
The battle in prayer is against two things in the earthlies: wandering thoughts, and lack of intimacy with God’s character in His Word.
…The effect of prayer on ourselves is the building up of our character in the understanding of the character of God, that is why we need patience in prayer.

God hears all of our prayers. Every single one. Yet sometimes we think He doesn’t hear or doesn’t love us because He doesn’t answer in the way or the timing we expected.
We must remember that prayer changes us. Prayer is drawing us into greater intimacy with our Father’s heart, just as Jesus prayed that we would be one with God as He is one with Him. Prayer is fashioning us into the people who can bring God glory on earth. Prayer is shaping our character.
Hang in there! Keep on praying, knowing that God does hear and He is doing something amazing through your prayer times.
It’s a focus of far too many people: “I’ve got to make a name for myself.” It’s nothing new but has been going on as long as men have been on earth.
In Revelation 3, Jesus is addressing the church in Sardis about their pursuit of a reputation. Jesus tells them, “You have definitely made a name for yourself. People know you are making things happen, and you have a reputation of being successful.” Sounds good, right? Except Jesus goes on to say, “But I’m not concerned about your reputation; I’m more interested in your character.”
Jesus uses the same Greek word four times in just six short verses to show the progression He is looking for to go from a popular reputation to godly character:
You have tried to make a name for yourself, but your focus is wrong (Rev. 3:1).
The name you should focus on is My name—you should be glorifying Me, not yourself (v. 4).
If you glorify Me, I will make sure your name is never erased from the Book of Life (v. 5a).
Not only that, if you glorify Me, I will personally introduce you to My Father. I will say, “This one is Mine!” (v. 5b)
Wow!
Contrast that with people who say, “Jesus, didn’t we do some pretty amazing things in Your name? Did you check us out?!?” And Jesus will reply to them, “I never knew you because you were only using Me to make yourself look good” (see Matthew 7:21-23; Revelation 3:2).
I am not living for the applause of men, but only for the applause of nail-scarred Hands.
I don’t want the headlines here, but I want to hear my Lord say, “Well done, good and faithful servant!”
I don’t want a reputation here, but I want a godly character in Heaven.
That’s the name I want!!

I love this prayer that Bishop Daniel Payne (1811-1853) prayed for himself. Pastor, do you think you could pray this? Could you pray to become invisible so that only Jesus Christ is seen and heard?
“Lord, Thou knowest my weakness—be Thou my strength. Thou knowest my ignorance—be Thou my wisdom. Teach me, that I may not be a blind leader of the blind, but a scribe well instructed unto the Kingdom of Heaven. O, let not the people see me; let them see You in Your vesture dipped in blood. Let them not hear me; let them hear You in Your voice of saving truth!”
Lord, may I be able to live this out in my pastoral ministry!

The Vocation Of A Saint
The vocation of a saint is to be in the thick of it “for His sake.” Whenever Jesus Christ refers to discipleship or to suffering, it is always, “for My sake.” The deep relationship of a saint is a personal one, and the reason a saint can be radiant is that he has lost interest in his own individuality and has become absolutely devoted to the Person of the Lord Jesus Christ.

A nice touch I appreciated in Andrew Murray’s book Raising Your Child To Love God was the prayers he included at the end of each of the 52 chapters of this book.
