Our Broken Treasures 

     It is a revelation of pure joyousness in which the child of God pours into the Father’s bosom the cares which give pain and anxiety that He may solve the difficulties. Too often we imagine that God lives in a place where He only repairs our broken treasures, but Jesus reveals that it is quite otherwise; He discerns all our difficulties and solves them before us. 

     We are not beggars on the one hand or spiritual customers on the other; we are God’s children, and we just stay before Him with our broken treasures or our pain and watch Him mend or heal in such a way that we understand Him better. 

From Christian Disciplines 

I think we sometimes forget the infinite capacity of our Heavenly Father. He is All-Loving: no one has ever—or can ever—love more completely and deeply than He does. He is also All-Powerful: there isn’t anything that limits His potency. What an amazing combination! If God were only loving but not powerful, we couldn’t be sure He was able to answer our prayer. If God were only powerful but not loving, we wouldn’t be comfortable about bringing our concerns to Him.

But He is Both! And as such, we should have such rock-solid confidence that He not only can answer prayer, but that He wants to answer prayer. He answers, as Oswald Chambers says, in ways that reveal more of His nature to us, so that we can understand Him better and better through each answered prayer.

The Ragamuffin Gospel (book review)

Ragamuffin GospelThe Ragamuffin Gospel by Brennan Manning was originally published 15 years ago, but its message to us is just as needed—maybe even more needed—today! The subtitle nails the essence of this book: Good news for the bedraggled, beat-up and burnt-out. Indeed it is.

Without realizing it, Manning’s ragamuffin message has impacted much of my thinking for the past decade. Ever since I started working in a church, I have been more acutely aware of how many people feel like their beat-up, burnt-out status somehow disqualifies them for God’s grace. The message they’ve heard is, “Get your act together, and then get yourself to God for help.” As a result our societies are filled with the de-churched, and our churches are only left with those who think they have their acts together.

Manning’s message is such a refreshing wake-up call! He speaks to those bedraggled de-churched people to assure them Jesus wants them just as they are. He came to meet with the messed-up and burnt-out, to show them Abba God’s love. Manning also confronts the pharisaical view of far too many Christians who truly think God only helps those who help themselves, and who want people to make themselves worthy of God’s grace.

This book was like a breath of fresh air. It clarified my frustrations with churchy people, and it renewed my passion for all the bedraggled, beat-up, and burnt-out to know the amazing, unconditional, unmerited, awe-inspiring grace of a All-Loving God!

Contemptible Unbelief 

     “All power is given unto Me in heaven and in earth” (Matthew 28:18). All power is given—unto whom? To the Being who lived a humble, obscure life in Nazareth; the One who says, “Come unto Me, all ye that labor and are heavy laden, and I will give you rest.” If all power is given to Jesus Christ, what right have I to insult Him by worrying? If we will let these words of Jesus come into our heart, we shall soon see how contemptible our unbelief is. 

     … Will I say skeptically, “What does Jesus Christ know about my circumstances? Is His power and understanding sufficient to manage things for me?” To talk like that is the way to realize the size of our unbelief, and to see why Jesus Christ was so stern in condemning it.

I love the phrase from the old hymn—

Everything to God in prayer! 

When I think how All-powerful and All-loving He is, I begin to see how utterly contemptible is my unbelief and my unwillingness to take everything to Him. If all power is given to Jesus Christ, what right have I to insult Him by worrying?
