“What does the Lord your God ask of you but to…
- revere Him,
- walk in obedience in all His ways,
- love Him,
- serve Him with all your heart and soul, and
- observe His commands…
…for your own good!” (Deuteronomy 10:12-13)
‘Nuff said!
Every once in a while I need to be reminded of this truth: “We can make our plans, but the Lord determines our steps.”
Yesterday my plans were set. They were planned down to the minute. Here was my agenda:
Instead, on my way to Kalamazoo, I had the following phone conversation:
“Sorry, but I forgot to drop the key off on Friday. Can I meet you at the house to give it to you?”
“Sure. I can meet you there.”
“I need to ask another favor. I’m running late. Can you just find a coffee shop somewhere and meet me about 30 minutes later than we had planned?”
“Okay,” I said not too assuredly since this was starting to throw off my “perfect” schedule.
I pulled into a McDonald’s in downtown Kalamazoo, right across the street from the Greyhound bus station. I sat in my car for a couple of minutes, and then felt the need for a fruit and yogurt parfait. After making my purchase I had a grand total of $7.94 left in my pocket.
I walked to the restroom.
Just as I walked in, a man motioned to me. He wanted to say something quietly to me. Given the neighborhood I was in, I was expecting the usual “Can you help me out with some loose change” plea. Instead…
“Um, can you help me out,” asked the man that would later introduce himself as Buster.
“Sure. What do you need?”
“I had an accident and I need some clothes to change into,” he said quietly.
“I saw a mission around the corner,” I said. “Do they have clothes?”
“Yea.”
“Okay, c’mon. I’ll walk over there with you.” And I turned to walk out of the restroom.
Buster grabbed my coat sleeve and pulled me back. “Um, he said looking at the floor, “I … I’m HIV-positive.”
“Really,” I said as I put my arm around his shoulders, “I’m Craig.”
Buster smiled.
We walked to the mission and he picked out some sweat pants, a sweatshirt, a pair of shoes, a pair of pants, and a winter jacket. Total: $7.42.
“I’m going to pay you back for this, Craig.”
“No, you’re not, Buster. This is my gift to you.”
As we walked toward the bus station, where Buster could use a restroom to change his clothes, he asked me,
“Do you ever think about dying?”
“I’m not afraid to die, Buster, but I’m not ready to leave just yet. Why do you ask?”
“Last night I got drunk. I was trying to get up enough courage to jump in front of a bus. I’m tired of living.”
“Buster, I think that would be the worst thing you could do.”
“Why? No one cares about me.”
“God does.”
“Really?”
“Buster, I don’t believe in accidents or coincidences. I wasn’t supposed to be at this McDonald’s today. But God rearranged my schedule just so I could meet you. God sent me here.”
Buster slowly nodded his head, “I believe that, Craig. I really do.”
Before I left Buster at the bus station, he asked for my phone number. I walked over to the ticket counter to borrow a pen. After I wrote my number down and turned around, a man was standing right in my path.
“My name’s Johnson. Buster told me what you did for him.”
I smiled and shook his hand.
“Why did you do that?” he asked.
I smiled again, “God sent me here. He loves Buster so much that He rearranged my schedule.”
“Can you help me,” Johnson asked, “but Buster said you used all of your money on him.”
“What do you need?”
He held open his hand with some loose change in it. “I need 50 cents more for my bus fare.”
I handed Johnson my last 52 cents.
King Solomon also wrote, “The Lord directs our steps, so why try to understand everything along the way?”
I didn’t understand why my “perfect” schedule got rearranged. But I’m glad it did. I’m glad I got to meet Buster.
“Bible study is love reading its Lover’s letters. Prayer is love keeping tryst.” —S.D. Gordon
The Bible is God’s love letter to humanity; more specifically, to you and me. But did you know that the Bible can also be used as our love letter to God?
If you’re a parent, you know how powerful it is when one of your children quote you back to you. Like when my daughter reminds me, “Dad, you said that you would….” Even if I haven’t forgotten what I said, it’s still so nice to know that she was listening to me and remembered what I promised her.
God has never, ever forgotten His word to us. But as our Heavenly Father, He loves to know that we hear His words, that we remember His promises, and that we love Him. So one of the most powerful prayers you can pray is when you pray God’s own words back to Him.
Personalized prayer based on God’s Word is a powerful prayer.
Let me give you an example. Here’s a prayer I wrote out the other day from 1 Chronicles 22:19—
Now…
There is no time to wait, I have to begin now. I cannot put it off a moment longer. It’s never an interruption of my day for me to draw closer to You, my God. Now I come to You in love.
devote…
This is not a partial commitment. I’m giving You my all. I’m laying all of me on Your altar. I’m not holding anything back. It’s all Yours, God, all of me.
your…
This is mine to give, and I’m choosing to give it to You. I’m not living for someone else; I’m not riding anyone’s coattails. I’m giving You what is mine to give. I’m giving you me.
heart…
My dreams, my passions, my desires. They’re all Yours, Heavenly Father. I reserve no passions for my own selfish pursuits, but I only have passion for You.
soul…
My inmost being—who I really am—the part of me that’s truly me is all Yours. My mind, my will, my emotions, my personality is only alive because of You.
seeking…
My longing, my soul’s craving is for You. I look for You’re everywhere and in everything. I seek You in the bird’s song, in the ocean’s roar, in the mountain’s majesty, in the midnight’s silence, in the bee’s buzz, in my children’s laughter, in my wife’s kiss, in my friend’s counsel, in Your love letter to me.
the Lord…
You are Lord over all. There is not now, nor ever will there be, anyone to take Your place in my heart.
your God…
You are mine and I am Yours. Forever. Because You loved me I love You, my God.
Now devote your heart and soul to seeking the Lord your God (1 Chronicles 22:19).
Use your Bible to form your own powerfully intimate prayers to the Lover of your soul.
Aaah, amoré… love! Isn’t it wonderful to be in love? When you fell in love with your sweetheart, I’ll bet you had a special “love song” just for the two of you. Betsy and I did, and it’s still our special song today.
There’s something about music and song that seems to fuel the emotions of love. Something about those words and those haunting melodies that speak to our hearts unlike anything else can. A poem set to music.
Yesterday I wrote about God’s strong and loving hands—powerful enough to provide, loving enough to hold just you.
But did you know that God also sings a love song about you? Check it out—
The LORD your God is with you,
He is mighty to save.
He will take great delight in you,
He will quiet you with His love,
He will rejoice over you with singing. (Zephaniah 3:17)
Isn’t it amazing to think about God being so delighted with you that He sings you a love song?! I believe it is a song written and sung just for you! And I don’t think God has just one song for you.
Think about how music has impacted you. Maybe you’ve cranked up that special tune when you’re out with friends … or the song you played over and over to help you through a tough time … or the love song that is special just for the two of you … or the ready-for-battle song you used to get pumped up for the big game! Special songs for special moments.
In every season of your life, listen for God’s special song just for you and then join in the song with Him—
But each day the LORD pours His unfailing love upon me, and through each night I sing His songs, praying to God Who gives me life. (Psalm 42:8, New Living Translation)
Sing for joy, O heavens, and be joyful, O earth, and break forth into singing, O mountains! For the Lord has comforted His people and will have compassion upon His afflicted. (Isaiah 49:13, Amplified Bible)
But I will sing of Your strength, in the morning I will sing of Your love; for You are my fortress, my refuge in times of trouble. (Psalm 59:16, New International Version)
Are you hearing any of God’s love songs today? Are you singing along?

Mahalia Jackson sang it so well, “He’s got the whole world in His hands.” Beautiful song … incredible truth!
But what does that mean? How can we grasp that concept? The prophet Isaiah tried to capture the essence of this when he asked who else but God “has measured the waters in the hollow of His hand, or with the breadth of His hand marked off the heavens?” (Isaiah 40:12).
Hold your hand palm up, fingers tight together to make a “dish” in the palm of your hand. How much water can you hold in that hollow of your hand? I just tried it and I couldn’t even hold ¼-cup of water. Yet Isaiah says that the hollow of God’s hand holds all the water of the earth.
How much is that? According to the US Geological Survey, the total water supply of the world is 326 million cubic miles. A cubic mile is an imaginary cube measuring one mile on each side. A cubic mile of water equals more than one trillion gallons (that‘s a 1 with 12 zeros following it!)—
One cubic mile of water (1 trillion gallons) x 326 million cubic miles =
326 quintillion gallons of water (326 followed by 18 zeros)!!
God holds ALL of this in the hollow of His hand!
Now stretch out your fingers as wide apart as you can. What is the distance from the tip of your thumb to the tip of your pinky finger? The breadth of my hand is about nine inches. Isaiah says that all of the stars in the universe fit into the breadth of God‘s hand.
How many is that? According to the European Space Agency, there are something like 10 trillion stars (a 10 followed by 12 zeros) just in our galaxy, and they estimate there are something like 10 trillion galaxies—
10 trillion stars in our galaxy x 10 trillion galaxies =
10 septillion stars (10 followed by 24 zeros)!!
God holds ALL of these stars in the breadth of His hand!
To say God’s hands are big and powerful is an understatement of astronomical proportions!
You might be thinking, “With hands that big, I’m so insignificant. I’m lost to God’s sight because His hands are so big.” But there is another aspect to God’s hands—they are not only big, but they are loving.
“Behold, I have indelibly imprinted—tattooed a picture of you—on the palm of each of My hands…” (Isaiah 49:16 AMP). God knows you by name—you are tattooed on His loving hands. His hands which are big enough to hold all the water and all the stars are loving enough to hold you!
Wow, what an incredible God! Powerful enough to protect and provide for us, tender enough to love each of us as though we were the only person in the universe to love!
