Earth Day And The Christian

Earth Day 2013Some Christians I know shy away from being involved with anything that’s even remotely related to Earth Day. They tell me that Earth Day seems too “earthy” or even “worldly” for them. I disagree. For the Christian, I believe there are a couple of principles that converge and therefore compel us to be involved.

The first principle is mankind’s original mandate. When God created Adam and Eve and placed them in His garden, He gave them the responsibility and privilege of caring for His creation. They were to care for both the plants and animals, making sure a healthy environment was maintained for them to be fruitful (see Genesis 1:26-28 and 2:15).

The second principle is Christ’s directive. Jesus told Christians to shine like lights and season like salt, “that they may see your good deeds and praise your Father in heaven” (Matthew 5:14-16). Even Jesus Himself “went around doing good” (Acts 10:38).

So when there’s an opportunity to care for our environment by doing “good deeds,” I’m going to take advantage of that every single time!

Saturday, April 26, beginning at 10am, is the annual Earth Day and Cedar Creek cleanup in Cedar Springs. I will be there along with a number of other folks from Calvary Assembly of God. I encourage others in Cedar Springs to join us. If you live in a different community, find an activity in which you can get involved and let your light shine brightly and lovingly in your city.

See You At The Pole

SYATPI am excited to be a part of the annual See You At The Pole prayer time. In Cedar Springs, we will be praying at three schools:

  • Middle School at 7:05am
  • Red Hawk Elementary at 7:10am
  • High School at 7:20am

If you are near Cedar Springs, please come pray with us at one of these locations. If you live in a different city, please consider organizing a student-led prayer time at your local school.

Lots Of Winners!

Our Impact youth group had a contest to see which school could raise the most money for Speed The Light (STL). STL helps missionaries purchase the equipment that will help them speed the light of the gospel around the world. Our Cedar Springs students, Kent City students, and missionaries are all winners!

She Did What She Could

She Did What She CouldIt is one of the most beautiful scenes in the Bible: Mary, a woman set free by the power of Jesus, anoints Him with her fragrant perfume. The Bible says that the people sitting around Jesus were “indignant at the waste” of perfectly good perfume. Some may have even thought, “What’s the point?”

But Jesus responds, “Leave her alone, she has done a beautiful thing to Me. She did what she could” (Mark 14:1-9).

Apparently Mary was not a woman of great wealth, but she did what she could. And Jesus said it was beautiful.

I cannot feed all the hungry people in the world, but I can feed one hungry student in Cedar Springs.

I cannot share the gospel with every unreached people group on the planet, but I can give a few dollars a month to a missionary who is reaching a tribe in northern India.

I cannot undo all of the injustice done to women, but I can support the W.A.R. Chest Boutique who is is helping rescue women from slavery.

I cannot counsel every woman contemplating an abortion, but I can volunteer at Alpha Family Centers whose counselors are lovingly counseling women to choose life.

I should never allow the largeness of the situation or the smallness of my resources to paralyze me from acting. I can be like Mary who did what she could.

Lifewalk 2013 = Huge Success

Lifewalk for Alpha Family Center was a huge success this year! Over 160 walkers representing 18 area churches raised $12,000 for this vital ministry!

Huge thanks to Lorrie Shelton (Alpha’s director), the army of volunteers who helped with all the behind-the-scenes work, and our sponsors and underwriters for boldly making a stand for life.

Below are a few pictures from our day together, but you can see my full collection on Flickr by clicking here.

Lifewalk 2013

Lifewalk logo 2013I am grateful for Alpha Family Center in Cedar Springs. They provide resources for our community to promote life, including pregnancy testing, counseling, and other parental resources for young families in our community. They stand solidly for life.

And I want to stand with them.

Lifewalk is the annual fundraiser for Alpha. This one event brings in a significant amount of the annual budget that Alpha needs. Will you consider sponsoring me as I walk in Lifewalk?

If you would like to sponsor me or make a donation, please comment below or email me by clicking here, and I’ll get more details to you.

Thanks for helping me walk for life.

Serving On Sunday

A couple of years ago a fellow Cedar Springs pastor told me about his plan for Service Sunday. His idea was to shorten his church service, so that his church could go serve in the community. I loved the idea so much that I said, “We want in on that too!”

So this past Sunday was our second year being involved with a couple of other churches in serving our community. I led a group that sang some old hymns at the Metron nursing home, others provided full service gas station attention for local motorists, others washed the windows of businesses along Main Street, others planted flowers, and on and on.

I wrote an article in last week’s Cedar Springs Post encouraging everyone to find ways to serve in our community every day (my article “Make Everyday Special” can be read by clicking here). I pray that our churches in Cedar Springs are known for their involvement in our community year-round.

Service Sunday

Community Service Sunday 2013I love this! Several Cedar Springs churches will be wrapping up their Sunday services earlier than usual to head out into the community to continue worshipping God. We worship Him by loving others as He loves us!

Our church members will be spreading out throughout the city to perform all sorts of acts of service: From providing full-service gasoline services to area motorists, to washing the windows of businesses along Main Street, to singing for the residents at Metron nursing home, to sprucing up Elmwood Cemetery, to many other activities, there is something for everyone.

I hope you and your church can join us this Sunday, May 4.

EnGedi Youth Center

EnGedi Poster 2013I am so privileged to work as the director of the EnGedi Youth Center. EnGedi is a Christ-centered after-school program in the Cedar Springs schools.

Each afternoon we provide the students with a healthy snack, and opportunity to get some tutoring or some homework help, and then lots of classes and sports opportunities. The relationships I’ve made this school year with both the students and their parents have been so rewarding!

EnGedi needs your help.

This is a privately funded 501(c)3 nonprofit organization. So EnGedi is dependent upon the contributions of businesses, churches, and individuals to provide our operating funds. On Friday, May 17, you have a chance to help us reach even more students in Cedar Springs by participating in our fundraising auction.

There will be silent auctions, live auctions with auctioneer Art Smith, desserts, and lots of other fun activities.

Here’s how you can help:

  • Donate items that we can auction off
  • Make a cash donation to EnGedi
  • Attend the auction on May 17 and bid on lots of great items

We have a corporate sponsor who will match each dollar spent at our auction up to $10,000. That means for every $1 you spend, EnGedi gets $2. It’s a WIN all the way around.

Caring For Our City

This week we celebrated Earth Day, where I think Christians should be at the forefront in taking care of God’s creation.

It is a shame that so many evangelical Christians not only have little concern for the environment, but are sometimes known as anti-environmental. How can this be when our Creator God has asked us to care for His creation? Not only is our pollution of the earth totally unacceptable, but this is an issue that our young people care about; and if we don’t connect with them on valid issues such as preservation of the environment, how can we expect them to listen to us at all? —George Verwer (emphasis added)

I couldn’t agree more with Mr. Verwer! So here are some places that Calvary Assembly of God is getting involved, and I encourage you to join us (if you live near Cedar Springs), or do something similar in your own community.

Cedar Creek cleanup 2013Cedar Creek Cleanup—Saturday, April 27, from 10am-noon. We’ll be cleaning up along the banks of the Cedar Creek, and even in the creek itself. We’ll also help clean up trash and debris along the White Pine Trail where it passes through the city and intersects with Cedar Creek. We will have some waders to use, but please make sure you wear clothes that you don’t mind getting wet and dirty.

Community Service Sunday 2013Service Sunday—Sunday, May 5, from 11am-2pm. This is a collaboration with several other churches in Cedar Springs. We’re shortening up our gatherings in our church buildings, so we can head out into the community to put our worship in action. There’s a long list of activities including: providing full-service to motorists at local gas stations, painting and sprucing up Elmwood Cemetery, planting flowers, singing for the residents of Metron Nursing Home, trash pick, window washing for businesses along Main Street, and many, many more. And we’ll wrap up our work time with a potluck lunch in Morley Park.

Community Cleanup Days—Saturday, May 11, from 10am-noon. Similar to the cleanup efforts in Cedar Springs, we’ll be tackling some spring cleaning projects around Solon Township.
