Valuing Life

SOHL“As surely as I valued your life today, so may the Lord value my life and deliver me from all trouble.” —David, in 1 Samuel 26:24

This is as strong of a pro-life statement as any in the Bible!

The Hebrew word for value in this verse means…

  • to grow up
  • to become great or important
  • to do great things

Throughout the Old Testament this word is used to describe people growing from a small, infantile state to a place of maturity and prominence.

David held King Saul’s life in his hand. Since Saul was hell-bent on messing up David’s life (even killing him, if he could), we could say that David had plenty of rationale to justify ending Saul’s life. But David would not touch Saul because he recognized Saul’s God-given human dignity.

David asked God to value his life in the same way that David valued Saul’s life. Even Saul himself affirmed this when he said, “May you be blessed, my son David; you will do great things and surely triumph” (v. 25).

What if God only valued your life as much as you valued others’ lives?

What if God only spoke up for you as much as you spoke up for the not-yet-born?

What if God only blessed you as much as you blessed the aged and disabled?

How much would your life be blessed by God?

Something to think about as we celebrate Sanctity of Human Life month. We will be honoring Sanctity of Human Life Sunday this week by bringing our donations for Alpha Family Center of Cedar Springs. I would love for you to join us!

Sanctity Of Human Life Month

Sanctity Of Human Life MonthJanuary is designated as sanctity of human life month. This is an issue about which I am passionate. Life is a gift from God, and the attacks against this gift are a slap at the Hand of our gracious Heavenly Father.

When a biblical principle is being attacked, we have two ways to respond: (a) Curse the darkness, or (2) Light a candle.

Since Jesus told us that we were to be the light of the world, I choose to light a candle.

There are lots of ways to do this:

  • Support pro-life legislators
  • Stay informed, and then write appropriate editorials and letters to editors
  • Pray, pray, pray!
  • Get involved with those on the front lines

In Cedar Springs we have a great pro-family, pro-life organization on the front lines called Alpha Family Center. (In the interest of full disclosure, I currently serve as the board president of Alpha, but I was a huge fan before I signed on for this.)

At Calvary Assembly of God, we are showing our support for the sanctity of human life by collecting needed supplies for Alpha during the month of January. Over the next weeks, please donate baby items like onesies, pacifiers, diapers, pull-ups, baby wipes, baby socks, or receiving blankets. You can also make a financial donation to Alpha Family Center (PayPal link).

Let’s shine brightly for life by supporting Alpha!

“The Marvel That Is Us”

Alexander Tsiaras is a professor at Yale. This is a highly educated, brilliant man. In this video he is telling his audience that what scientists are learning about the human body, and there is one word that keeps occurring in his vocabulary: Divine.

The Bible says,

God, You made all the delicate, inner parts of my body and knit me together in my mother’s womb. Thank You for making me so wonderfully complex! Your workmanship is marvelous—how well I know it. (Psalm 139:13-14)

Check out this video to see how wonderfully complex and divine our Creator is—

I’m Walking!

…and I would like to ask for your help.

I’m participating in the 2001 Lifewalk to benefit the Alpha Family Center in Cedar Springs. Alpha provides all sorts of resources to teens and particularly counseling for young, often unwed, parents. Lifewalk is their major fundraising event each year.

So here are two ways you can help:

  1. Sign-up to walk with me on Saturday, June 18, at 10am. You can sign up and get a sponsorship form by clicking here.

  2. Make a financial pledge to me for walking in Lifewalk. If you would like to make a pledge, you can do so through PayPal (be sure to put “Lifewalk” on the memo line).

Thank you for helping me support this solidly PRO-LIFE organization!

Light For Life

This week is Sanctity Of Human Life week. I’m passionate about this issue; in fact, it’s one of the main issues in politics in which I really get involved.

We’ll be celebrating Sanctity Of Human Life this Sunday, January 23, at Calvary Assembly of God. We’ll have an update on 38 years of pain since the infamous Roe v. Wade decision, and a presentation from Alpha Family Center, an organization in Cedar Springs that I wholeheartedly support.

This Sunday evening, I’m encouraging everyone to shine a light in support of life. We’ll have some special candle bags to hand out on Sunday, and we’re encouraging everyone to line their driveway or carport or sidewalk with these “I Support Life” bags. Even if you can’t come to Calvary on Sunday, you can put a small candle in a paper lunch bag. Let’s light up the darkness and speak up for those who can’t speak for themselves:

Speak up for those who cannot speak for themselves; ensure justice for those being crushed.

Stand Up For Life

It’s a sad reality that Christians are known more for what we’re against than what we’re for. But we can change this perception if we’ll find some positive things to support.

Here’s a great opportunity:  Focus On The Family has helped to get a commercial on the air during the upcoming Super Bowl. The commercial will feature a woman named Pam, a mother who will tell how doctors recommended that she have an abortion after discovering some complications with her pregnancy. She refused to have an abortion.

Pam then gave birth to Tim—Tim Tebow, that is, who went on to become one of the most successful college football quarterbacks ever.

Pro-abortion groups are already lashing out. They are trying to bully and intimidate CBS into pulling the ad from the Super Bowl. Even though they haven’t even seen the commercial yet they are convinced that airing it will be a bad thing.

Here’s what you can do to help. Email Sean McManus, the President of CBS News and Sports, and tell him, “I want to see this ad during the Super Bowl.”

Don’t let a vocal minority intimidate CBS.

Stand up for life.

Precious Life

Today is Sanctity Of Human Life Sunday. It’s the day we take time to remember this awesome truth:

For You created my inmost being;
You knit me together in my mother’s womb.

I praise You because I am fearfully and wonderfully made;
Your works are wonderful,
I know that full well.

My frame was not hidden from You
when I was made in the secret place.
When I was woven together in the depths of the earth,

Your eyes saw my unformed body.
All the days ordained for me
were written in Your book

before one of them came to be.

Life is precious… all life. Today I’m challenging Calvary Assembly of God to help support the Alpha Family Center in Cedar Springs, MI. This is a wonderful organization:

  • Gives free pregnancy tests.
  • Helps young people cope with the anxiety of an unexpected pregnancy.
  • Provides resources to young parents.
  • Offers counseling to those who have experienced sexual abuse or a miscarriage.
  • Supports women who have undergone an abortion.

Celebrate precious life whenever and however you can. Life is so very precious!
