Lifewalk 2013

Lifewalk logo 2013I am grateful for Alpha Family Center in Cedar Springs. They provide resources for our community to promote life, including pregnancy testing, counseling, and other parental resources for young families in our community. They stand solidly for life.

And I want to stand with them.

Lifewalk is the annual fundraiser for Alpha. This one event brings in a significant amount of the annual budget that Alpha needs. Will you consider sponsoring me as I walk in Lifewalk?

If you would like to sponsor me or make a donation, please comment below or email me by clicking here, and I’ll get more details to you.

Thanks for helping me walk for life.

Sanctity Of Human Life Month

Sanctity Of Human Life MonthJanuary is designated as sanctity of human life month. This is an issue about which I am passionate. Life is a gift from God, and the attacks against this gift are a slap at the Hand of our gracious Heavenly Father.

When a biblical principle is being attacked, we have two ways to respond: (a) Curse the darkness, or (2) Light a candle.

Since Jesus told us that we were to be the light of the world, I choose to light a candle.

There are lots of ways to do this:

  • Support pro-life legislators
  • Stay informed, and then write appropriate editorials and letters to editors
  • Pray, pray, pray!
  • Get involved with those on the front lines

In Cedar Springs we have a great pro-family, pro-life organization on the front lines called Alpha Family Center. (In the interest of full disclosure, I currently serve as the board president of Alpha, but I was a huge fan before I signed on for this.)

At Calvary Assembly of God, we are showing our support for the sanctity of human life by collecting needed supplies for Alpha during the month of January. Over the next weeks, please donate baby items like onesies, pacifiers, diapers, pull-ups, baby wipes, baby socks, or receiving blankets. You can also make a financial donation to Alpha Family Center (PayPal link).

Let’s shine brightly for life by supporting Alpha!

Prayer Focus: Outreaches

As this week marks the beginning of a “new year,” (as students are heading back to school and we’re all settling in to our fall routines), we are taking time to focus our prayers.

Today’s pray focus is for our fall outreaches.

“Sometimes I’m asked to list the most important steps in preparing for an evangelistic mission, and my reply is always the same: prayer . . . prayer . . . prayer.” —Billy Graham

How true this is! If we try to take on any kind of project in our own ingenuity or our own strength, we are setting ourselves up for disappointment. The greatest example of prayer … prayer … prayer is Jesus. Throughout His public ministry, you will see prayer preceding all of the major ministry activities.

Not only that, but we see Jesus praying for us just prior to His crucifixion (see John 17) that we would spread the news about Him in God’s strength. And then just before His ascension, Jesus told His followers,

Do not leave Jerusalem, but wait for the gift My Father promised, which you have heard Me speak about. For John baptized with water, but in a few days you will be baptized with the Holy Spirit. …But you will receive power when the Holy Spirit comes on you; and you will be My witnesses in Jerusalem, and in all Judea and Samaria, and to the ends of the earth. (Acts 1:4, 5, 8)

We have several local ministries in which we are involved throughout the year, and we have some special ministry opportunities we will be undertaking this fall. In addition, there are many, many missionaries which have counting on our prayer support.

Please pray for our involvement with:

Please pray for the missionaries that we know and love so much:

  • Kirk & Jayne Flanagan
  • David & Kristen Speer
  • Craig & Sharon Metzner
  • Ray & Deborah Miller
  • Bob & Rhonda Thomas
  • Dianne Eklund
  • Bob & Bette Sue MacIsaac
  • Joshua & Amber Payne
  • Matt & Carrie Love
  • Scott & Rachel Shank

Baby, I’m On Board

The theme for this year’s Lifewalk for Alpha Family Centers was Baby, I’m On Board! And I was so glad that Calvary Assembly of God was on board to help this wonderful pro-life organization in Cedar Springs! This year our worship team provided music prior to the walk, we had several from our congregation participating in Lifewalk, and our church was a sponsor for Lifewalk 2012.

Here are some pictures of the day —

Walking For Life

Nope, this isn’t about exercising (although we’ll get a little of that in too). It’s about walking to make a stand.

Confused yet?

I’m talking about the annual LifeWalk for Alpha Family Center in Cedar Springs. I serve the God Who created life, and because I serve Him, I love life like He loves life. So I’m happy to throw my wholehearted support behind Alpha in their Lifewalk.

Can I ask for your help too? Here are some ways you can get involved:

  • Sponsor me. I’ll be walking in LifeWalk, and I would appreciate your sponsorship. You can click here to send me an email letting me know how much you would like to pledge me. I’ll send you a receipt that you can use for tax purposes.
  • Walk with us. If you live near Cedar Springs, you can click here to download your own pledge sheet.
  • Pray. Pray for organizations like Alpha. Pray that our elected officials will enact pro-life legislation. Pray for the young women that find themselves pregnant, that they will turn to organizations like Alpha.

I am especially excited this year that Calvary Assembly of God will be a major sponsor for LifeWalk! We want to do all we can to support life, and I hope you will join with us.

Practical Is Spiritual

In Matthew 25, Jesus shows how very practical acts of service are also very spiritual acts of service. Quite simply Jesus says,

  • If someone’s hungry, give them food.
  • If they’re thirsty, given them water.
  • If they need a visit, go visit them.

What makes these practical acts spiritual is this word from our Heavenly Father: Whatever you did for those in need, you did for Me.”

So here’s a very practical—and spiritual—thing Calvary Assembly of God is doing this Christmas: A Bottom Blessing. We’re accepting donations of diapers, pull-ups, and wipes to take to the Alpha Family Center. This crisis pregnancy resource center in Cedar Springs helps so many young families, so we want to help them in a very practical way. Anytime between now and Christmas Day, bring your diapers or wipes to the church, and we’ll deliver them to Alpha.

If you don’t live around Cedar Springs, find a practical way to help others in need in your community. As you do, you’ll be doing something very spiritual as well… something to which God says, Well done!

Weekend Review

I feel so full after such a wonderfully full-filling weekend.

On Saturday morning our worship team helped kick-off Lifewalk 2011, by leading some worship songs during the registration time. I love doing spiritual battle alongside this team! It was a great way to remind everyone why we were there.

God gave us beautiful weather for Lifewalk! Along our route we stopped to pray at Cedar Spring City Hall, The Springs Church, Alpha Family Center, and Red Hawk school. When we returned to our starting point in Morely Park, we were greeted with the great news that Lifewalk had raised nearly $12,000!

I had the privilege of addressing the Lifewalk participants just before we released our balloons. I spoke from Ephesians 2:10, where we read that God created us in advance to do good works that would bring Him glory. Unfortunately, tens of millions of babies have been aborted before they had a chance to do their good works, so it is now up to us, the living, to redouble our efforts. We need to do not only the good works God prepared us to do, but also the good works of those aborted lives. It was a somber, yet empowering, reminder.

20110620-063303.jpgOn Sunday morning I spoke to our Dads on Father’s Day. I told the story of Boaz the kinsman-redeemer from the book of Ruth. Boaz was a man motivated by God’s word, and a man who did not give in to culture’s pull. Boaz was also a picture of Jesus Christ as the ultimate Kinsman-Redeemer. I challenged our Dads to remember that they are the representation of Christ to their wives and kids.

The highlight of Sunday morning for me was watching all of our Dads serve Communion to the rest of the church. Powerful! What a reminder to all of us that Dads are to love and serve their families just as Christ loves and serves His Church.

To cap it all off, I got to have lunch with both my Dad and my kids. It was a very moving thing for me to not only honor my Dad, but to read the notes my kids had written to me. Part of what I wrote to my Dad was about the investment he made in my life. Then he and I both watched that investment being compounded in the lives of his grandkids. How awesome is that!

When I experience such a full weekend, only one thought dominates my mind: How blessed am I! I love living my life to honor my Heavenly Father, and I’m so grateful I get to share that life with so many other incredible people.

I’m Walking!

…and I would like to ask for your help.

I’m participating in the 2001 Lifewalk to benefit the Alpha Family Center in Cedar Springs. Alpha provides all sorts of resources to teens and particularly counseling for young, often unwed, parents. Lifewalk is their major fundraising event each year.

So here are two ways you can help:

  1. Sign-up to walk with me on Saturday, June 18, at 10am. You can sign up and get a sponsorship form by clicking here.

  2. Make a financial pledge to me for walking in Lifewalk. If you would like to make a pledge, you can do so through PayPal (be sure to put “Lifewalk” on the memo line).

Thank you for helping me support this solidly PRO-LIFE organization!

Light For Life

This week is Sanctity Of Human Life week. I’m passionate about this issue; in fact, it’s one of the main issues in politics in which I really get involved.

We’ll be celebrating Sanctity Of Human Life this Sunday, January 23, at Calvary Assembly of God. We’ll have an update on 38 years of pain since the infamous Roe v. Wade decision, and a presentation from Alpha Family Center, an organization in Cedar Springs that I wholeheartedly support.

This Sunday evening, I’m encouraging everyone to shine a light in support of life. We’ll have some special candle bags to hand out on Sunday, and we’re encouraging everyone to line their driveway or carport or sidewalk with these “I Support Life” bags. Even if you can’t come to Calvary on Sunday, you can put a small candle in a paper lunch bag. Let’s light up the darkness and speak up for those who can’t speak for themselves:

Speak up for those who cannot speak for themselves; ensure justice for those being crushed.

LikeWalk 2010

Just wanted to get this on everyone’s radar screen. I love Alpha Family Center and totally believe in their mission. This is a very simple way for you to get involved and to help support Alpha.

This walk is their major fundraiser of the year. So go to their website (click here), get a pledge form, find some sponsors, and then come walk with me on Saturday, June 19.
